Where Learning Sparks Enthusiasm, Exploration, and Independence!

Free the child's potential

our philosophy

Encouraging Independence

Cultivating Curiosity

Balancing Learning with Creativity and socialization

Young children have a natural sense of wonder and curiosity. Their first school experience should enhance this by exposing them to the excitement of learning; stimulating and challenging their body, mind and spirit. At San Mateo Montessori the children experience the joy of discovery in an environment that is rich with inviting activities pertaining to all facets of life.

The Montessori program offers a strong academic foundation, however, it is not our goal for the children to simply memorize facts and information. We hope to kindle enthusiasm, encourage exploration and build independence.

"The secret of good teaching is to regard the child's intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination."

- Maria Montessori

THE PROGRAM

During the morning Montessori session, the children choose “jobs” from areas such as math, science, language, practical life and sensorial. In keeping with the Montessori philosophy, there is a strong emphasis on geography and the cultural studies. The children explore various lands and cultures with literature, music, cooking, crafts, dress-up and other hands on activities.  Spanish classes are held regularly, with reinforcement throughout the week. Sciences, such as botany, astronomy, anatomy, etc. are presented with fun, interactive materials. A ratio of 1:7 allows teachers to provide the children with individualized guidance.

The afternoons at San Mateo Montessori are creative and group oriented, providing a nice balance to the more individualized work of the morning session. The children enjoy activities such as arts and crafts, music, storytelling, cooking, dance and yoga… a very well-rounded curriculum.

Our beautiful backyard offers endless opportunities for fun and recreation. Under the canopy of mature fruit trees, our young explorers enjoy climbing structures, playhouses, and an expansive turf and sand area. Our year-round vegetable and flower garden is the perfect outdoor classroom for nature study, and patio picnic tables offer a social lunchtime experience.

THE STAFF : The excellence of our program is made possible by our highly qualified and dedicated staff.  Most of the teachers have been with us for over a decade.  All are college graduates, certified as Montessori teachers and/or meet state requirements for Early Childhood Education.
